Our Name

As our name derives from the John Lewis quote: "When we see something that is not right, not fair, not just... we have a moral obligation to say something, do something, get in trouble, good trouble, necessary trouble." We also pay homage to Bayard Rustin who said: "I believe in social dislocation and creative trouble. We need, in every community, a group of angelic troublemakers." Both quotes act as the impetus for the activist energy on this website.

We are further inspired by the writings and lifework of such founders and trailblazers as Martin Luther King Jr, James Baldwin, Barack Obama, Thomas Jefferson, James Madison, Ruth Bader Ginsburg, Gloria Steinem, Harvey Milk and others. Contemporary influences include people like Heather Cox Richardson, Robert Reich, John Pavlovitz, Jay Shetty, Adam Mockler, William Barber, and Bill Moyers. And organizations like Southern Poverty Law Center, Human Rights Campaign, Advocate Magazine, Americans United, American Humanist Association, and National Public Radio.
